However, they face numerous threats including habitat destruction, poaching, pollution, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear. These threats have contributed to a significant decline in their global population and they’re now one of the most endangered ocean animals.

Current estimates indicate that there are approximately 6.5 million sea turtles left globally. This figure, however, varies between species, with some, like the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle, having a population as low as 20,000. The conservation and protection of these magnificent creatures is paramount to maintaining balance in our world's oceans.

2) Humphead Wrasse

Also known as the Napoleon Wrasse, this is a remarkable marine creature that is facing significant threats. Population estimates are not exact due to the expansive range of this species, but the overall population trend is notably downward.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Humphead Wrasse as endangered, primarily due to overfishing and habitat destruction. These wrasses are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because of their large size, slow breeding rate, and predictable spawning sites. Additionally, the degradation of coral reefs, their primary habitat, due to climate change and pollution, further exacerbates the survival challenges for this species.

3) Blue Whales

Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth, reaching lengths of up to 100 feet and weights of up to 200 tons. Once hunted nearly to extinction for their blubber, they are now listed as endangered, with a population of approximately 10,000 to 25,000 individuals globally.

Threats to blue whales include ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and the impacts of climate change on their food supply. Noise pollution is also a concern as it interferes with their communication and navigation.

4) Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea, reaching lengths of 40 feet or more. Despite their size, they pose no risk to humans and are known for their docile nature. They live in warm waters across the globe, from the surface to depths of 1,900 metres. However, they are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with their population showing a decreasing trend.

Major threats to whale sharks include commercial fishing, bycatch losses due to fisheries, vessel strikes, and marine debris. Additionally, their slow growth and late maturation make population recovery a slow process. It is estimated there are less than 25,000 left in our oceans. The conservation of this species is crucial for the health and functioning of marine ecosystems.

5) Hawaiian Monk Seal

The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a critically endangered species native to the Hawaiian Islands. Conservation efforts are in place to protect and monitor these unique creatures, however, their isolated location and low reproductive rate make population recovery challenging. The survival of the Hawaiian Monk Seal is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of their marine habitat.

Protecting the world’s endangered sea animals

Serving as the only fleet in the world whose sole purpose is to protect all marine wildlife, we are committed to the protection and enforcement of conservation law.

Our model of engagement provides unique, at sea resources to assist, serve and support developing coastal and island governments in the protection of their sovereign waters against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

Support Sea Shepherd

Wearing our organic cotton apparel is one of the ways that you can support our mission in a practical way.
